Sweet 12 year old Emme Nees is a ball of energy, charisma and sass. “Fizzle” is her nickname for a reason because she like a firecracker – a firework bright and beautiful.
Emme was born with Down Syndrome and was diagnosed with Leukemia (ALL) at the age on 10/28/2013. She has fought this beast twice, relapsing on 8/2/2017, almost one year to the day after our makeover for her and her brother, Austin and sister Kenzie. Her treatment continues today but it hasnt dampened her spirit.
Emme loves to dance and sing. You hardly ever find her without her ipad and jamming to her music. She loves spaghetti more than anything. Vicki, Emme’s mom is very active with Heroes For Hope – a local non profit that works with a lot of our families. Her dedication to her family, to her community and to awareness of the need for better treatments and options for these kids is fierce. Emmes room was based on The Lorax and Dr. Seuss complete with Truffula Trees on the wall and Dr. Seuss shaped furniture. Kenzie got a teen room perfect for a girl and her sport fanatic brother, Austin got a boys hangout room with his own loft. To top it off, our team created a media room just for the star inside Emme – a stage for her to perform on and a karaoke machine.
“Where we had one makeover before this in an icestorm, the weekend we did Emme’s makeover it was a heatwave. Uncharacteristically hot, there was not much we could do other than push though. Emme’s reveal was one of my favorite to date – when she opened the door, she kicked off her shoes and jumped up and down on her bed. Her mom gave me a hug I will never forget – it was the hug of a mom who was just so grateful for the gift of joy in the middle of a storm” Erica Jones, Founder of Sunshine Spaces.
